Wool and Alpaca Undyed Unbleached Natural Double Knitting
A 50-50 blend of my own super Rare British Breed Castlemilk Moorit wool and Alpaca from friends. The color difference is not Dye but is achieved by varying the colour of the Alpaca. Each batch is tiny; only 15-18 kilos of each were made this year. These yarns are the only economic activity of my Castlemilk Moorits, sales support the continued existence of this very rare breed. There are only 700ish Castlemilks in the world, I have 33 and a new hatch of lambs due soon.
The yarns are super warm and lovely to the touch. I wish you could feel them provoke a “Wow” from all who squish them at a show. The Alpaca gives strength and density to the yarn, the yarn is heavier and warmer to wear then wool alone. The Castlemilk wool contributes a springiness and loft Alpaca lacks, the wool gives “grab” that holds the stitches in place and a weather resilience typical of wool. Together each element adds something the other lacks to make a singular and awesome yarn.
The Colours are natural and as such not “fixed” as they would be with dyed yarns. Each has not a single colour but many subtle varieties of similar colours which make a rich subtle look. They sit easily with almost any other colour, a single thread of another colour or and accessories will bring different shades out of the yarn.
